When the City of Longview launched Longview 101 this spring, the goal was simple: create an opportunity for residents to learn more about their local government and the people who serve the community every day.
Over eight weeks, participants met with City staff, toured facilities, explored City services, and learned about everything from public works, public safety and community development to budgeting, parks, recreation and the library. Along the way, they asked thoughtful questions, shared ideas and built new connections with one another and their local government.
Last week, the City Council recognized the 19 participants who completed the inaugural program.
What participants had to say
The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with every survey respondent saying they would recommend Longview 101 to a friend, neighbor or family member.
Participants shared that one of the most valuable aspects of the program was gaining a better understanding of the people behind City services and the collaboration required to keep Longview running. Many noted that they were surprised by the complexity of City operations, the dedication of City employees and the amount of work accomplished with limited resources.
One participant wrote, "You'll be surprised at what you don't know about how your community government serves you."
Another shared, "In Longview 101, you will learn that city staff are highly competent, intelligent, and passionate people working hard every day to improve our community."
Many participants also said the program helped them feel more connected to Longview and gave them a greater appreciation for the work that takes place behind the scenes every day to serve residents.
Thank you to participants
The City would like to thank everyone who participated in Longview 101, whether they attended a single session or completed the entire program. Their curiosity, engagement and willingness to learn helped make this inaugural effort a success.
Longview 101 returns this fall
Based on the strong response and valuable feedback received, the City plans to offer Longview 101 again this fall.
Whether residents are new to Longview or have lived there their entire lives, Longview 101 offers an opportunity to meet the people behind City services, learn how local government works and connect more deeply with the community.
