WHITEFISH – Brandon McIver carded his second straight round in the 60s to take a four-stroke lead after the second round of the Montana Men’s State Amateur golf tournament Friday at Whitefish Lake’s North Course.

The Billings golfer who competes for the University of Oregon shot a 4-under-par 68 to give him a 36-hole total of 7-under 137 heading into Saturday’s final round of the 54-hole tournament.

Missoula’s Tom Swanson, who competes for the University of Michigan, played his way into the final pairing by matching McIver’s round of 68. Swanson, who won the Barnett Memorial in May by 10 strokes, stands at 3-under 141.

Swanson and McIver, the defending champ, were the only golfers to break 70 on Friday.

Also in Saturday’s final foursome will be Jake Hedge of Billings, who carded a 71 on Friday to stand at 143, six strokes behind the leader.

The top three golfers are the only players under par for the tournament.

Three players – Spencer Williams of East Helena, Brian Beach of Missoula and Ryan Porch of Kalispell – stand at even-par 144 entering the final round.

Ross Bartell of Great Falls and Marcus Drange of Billings are at 1-over 145, eight strokes behind the leader.

Golfers will tee off Saturday at 7:20 a.m. The leaders are scheduled to begin at 12:10 p.m.
