STEVENSVILLE - Jon Wemple was born and raised in the Bitterroot Valley.

And in all his days spent here, he's never seen so many elk pushed so far down on to the valley floor.

"For the first time ever, I have elk right in my front yard here in Victor," Wemple said. "There's a reason they're doing what they're doing. I think a lot of that reason is wolves."

Wemple is president of the Montana Chapter of the Safari Club International - an organization focused on issues facing hunters. And when he heard that Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks was considering taking lethal action against elk raiding a Stevensville-area rancher's haystacks, Wemple volunteered that group's financial backing to help pay for a new style fence around the stack yard.
