What’s the matter with Christians?
Many of the ugliest character traits of Ravalli County residents were on full display at a recent Hamilton City Council meeting. A mob of frightened people were there, voicing their concerns because (brace yourself!) a handful of our local children have asked for permission to paint rainbows within a few crosswalks. Apparently the thought of rainbow crosswalks is enough to put the fear of God into many of the local citizenry.
Most of the anti-rainbow speakers made a point of informing everyone that they were Christians. I assume this was their way of saying that their vile and ignorant rants were Jesus approved. I haven’t been following recent changes in Christian doctrine so I wasn’t aware that Jesus has amended “Love thy neighbor…” with “… but hate your neighbor’s kids.”
While impugning the character of the children, the Christians were consistently misrepresenting the children’s motives. The motives are actually pretty easy to understand. What they want is for the City of Hamilton to say “You are safe here and you are welcome here.” Sounds like something you might mistakenly think Jesus said, doesn’t it?
If the members of the City Council can find in themselves even a fraction of the courage exhibited by these children, then that is exactly what the City of Hamilton will say.
