Facebook is a war zone

  • 0

I had hoped my FB page would be a respectful discussion of concerns and needs for the city of Hamilton. Instead, it became a FB warzone, with name calling and open hostility. I did not want insults on my page, so I blocked all comments. Instead I promoted the meet and greet I had scheduled and gave out my email so everyone could send me their concerns.

As far as I understand critical race theory, it is an evolving practice that looks at the role of race and racism embedded in the policies of social and educational institutions and law. The GI bill and Black WWII veterans is a great example. I think examining policies to make sure they are not tilted towards or away from any specific group is a step in the direction of equality.

As far as putting my name in for the city council bid on the last day possible, you are darn right I did. I had to think long and hard about stepping out of the comfort of anonymity into the spotlight. Especially after the heated arguments in city council over a rainbow crosswalk. A fairly benign way to make people feel like they are members of our town.

So here I am, as brave as I can be, willing to put myself out there and be an active part of my town, to represent my neighbors. I am listening to you Cathy, I’m willing to talk to you anytime. Just not on Facebook.

— Kathy Dexter, Hamilton
