The headline in the paper, from ER doctors at Marcus Daly, "We are on the brink of disaster" says it all.
And the response from our County Commissioners is to post the information from the ER doctors on their website. Recently the commissioners declined to issue a joint statement with the County Board of Health that encouraged people to take personal responsibility not to spread the virus.
One of the commissioners, in an email exchange with me, called that message “inflammatory and potentially divisive." The commissioners separate statement telling residents to “treat others with compassion and to respect each other’s right to make decisions about their own health” misses the whole point of public health and the collective good.
When citizens make decisions solely about their own health, during a time of pandemic, they are in fact putting others at risk so they can exercise personal freedom. Now our health care system is "on the brink of disaster," affecting not just COVID patients but all medical care in the county.
The lack of leadership by our commissioners, as demonstrated by their unwillingness to even support the Board of Public Health’s statement, has contributed to this medical disaster.
