Nelly Nicol, a Billings resident who works at an insurance company, is running as a Republican for state auditor.
Nicol said in a press release Thursday most of her career has been in the insurance industry. The auditor oversees that industry in the state, as well as securities.
“I was raised in a patriotic Marine Corps household and serving others is something that comes naturally to me," Nicol said in a press release. "As a candidate for the position of state auditor, I will work to protect Montana consumers, fight for their best interests and bring forth transparency in the auditor’s office.”
Republican Troy Downing announced his candidacy for the office earlier this year. Democrat state Rep. Shane Morigeau is the only Democrat seeking the seat so far.
In a press release, Nicol also emphasized the role the auditor plays on the state Land Board.

“It will be an honor to have a seat on the Land Board,” Nicol said. “I am a mother with children in Montana public schools, and someone who understands the responsibility of making decisions in the best interest of our precious Montana children and valuable land.”
Nelly also said she sees the auditor's office playing an important role in protecting seniors in the state.
“I have great love and respect for our veterans and elderly. I was employed as a CNA (certified nursing assistant) in nursing homes during my college years and was introduced to the love of my life while volunteering at a VA hospital. Unfortunately, criminals are targeting our older adult population. The state auditor's office is working in conjunction with other state agencies to fight this battle and keep Montanans safe so we can preserve our generous culture. I plan to keep The Senior Financial Exploitation Task Force a top priority,” she said.
Current state Auditor Matt Rosendale is not running for re-election to that job and instead has launched a bid for Montana's open U.S. House seat. That is being vacated by U.S. Rep. Greg Gianforte, a Republican who is running for governor.
Victory Insurance Co., where Nicol works, sued the auditor's office earlier this year over fees to access public information.
