A Hamilton man was charged Wednesday with distributing child pornography over the electronic messaging application Snapchat.
Artyom Daniel Barrett, 23, appeared before Ravalli County Justice Jim Bailey on two felony counts of sexual abuse of children and a felony charge of indecent exposure to a minor.
A charging affidavit said Barrett came to the attention of law enforcement in May after a detective traced an obscene photo sent to a 14-year-old girl that allegedly originated from Barrett’s Snapchat account.
After executing a search warrant on Barrett’s Snapchat account, the detective found a conversation that Barrett had with a girl who allegedly told Barrett she was 13. The affidavit said Barrett repeatedly asked her for photos and videos. He also allegedly sent the girl a pornographic video of a girl who appeared to be about 13.
The affidavit said the girl sent Barrett photos of herself wearing a bra and underwear.
The review of Barrett’s Snapchat account also uncovered conversations Barrett had with a 23-year-old man in Bozeman, allegedly about having sex with children. The men also allegedly exchanged images of video of children in sexual situations.
In a May 27 interview, Barrett allegedly admitted to sending a nude picture of himself to the underage girl and sending images of children in sexual situations to his friend in Bozeman.
Barrett allegedly told a sheriff’s sergeant that he “only did these things to fulfill the sexual desires” of the underage girls and the Bozeman man.
Bailey set bail at $50,000.
