HAMILTON — Justin James (JJ) Sargent, age 23, of Hamilton, died in his home on January 13, 2019, after complications from Bronchial Pneumonia.

Justin and his twin brother Jason were born on September 30, 1995, at Community Medical Center in Missoula. Because they were born 12 weeks prematurely, both boys required extra medical attention and were flown to Children’s Hospital in Seattle, Washington, a few days after birth. Sadly, due to a traumatic brain injury, Justin lived his life with the physical and cognitive challenges of Cerebral palsy.

Although Justin had a very short life by years count, and many of his abilities were diminished by his medical condition, his inner spirit was untouched and very much intact. In fact, “JJ was a gift from Heaven, much as every rainbow appears in the sky after a rain shower. However, there are not nearly enough colors in a rainbow to describe or show his effects on the ones who were lucky enough to be touched by his love. Justin taught us so much, especially the art of giving unconditional love to a child like any other!”

In his immediate family, Justin is survived by his twin brother, Jason; his father, Steven Sargent; his mother, Sheila (Cochrane) Sargent; and many grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Just as importantly, JJ is also survived by many caregivers, nurses, doctors, therapists, teachers, aids and friends. By last count, there were so many people who in either one way or another helped him with his life’s challenges, assisted with his family’s needs, or maybe, just were able to grow a little by being a part of his life here on earth.

As Justin’s father, I spent many years of my adult life assisting with or just marveling at his inner strength. However, for the last six months, since JJ’s passing, I have struggled with the simplest daily chores, trying my hardest to discover if I still had a purpose in my own life, writing this short amount, and finally deciding on a memorial worthy of Justin’s existence. That is why the following is so important,

“A Celebration of Justin’s Life” will be held at the Florence-Carlton Community Church in Florence, on Saturday, July 13, 2019, at 2 p.m. Everyone is invited to come and share their most uplifting personal stories about Justin, their most rewarding moments that they got to share with him, their funniest times that they had with JJ, or to even just sit back and listen to other’s best memories of the love that they were able to share with him. Because this is intended to be a celebration, I am kindly asking everyone in advance, that you only share memories that involved his spectacular smile. Along with this same spirit, I am asking anyone who attends to please wear the color red, his favorite. Everyone is also invited to stay for a provided meal after the service, and finally a balloon release will occur in memory of our beloved Justin!

A burial of his ashes will be at Riverview Cemetery in Hamilton, later this summer.

In lieu of flowers, donations preferred to be sent to St. Patrick’s House in Missoula.
