A Hamilton woman faces a felony criminal endangerment charge after allegedly leaving her 8-month-old baby alone in an idling car stopped in the the road in the middle of the night.

Kelsey Dean Root, 35, appeared Thursday in Ravalli County Justice Court.

Root’s son was found alone in the front seat of the car stopped in the middle of the intersection of Popham and Summerdale north of Corvallis at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to the charging affidavit. The baby was unrestrained and sleeping in the front seat.

The investigating sheriff’s officer ran the plates, which were identified as Root’s. She had been arrested for suspected drug use about 3:30 a.m. about 200 yards away from where the baby was found.

After law enforcement obtained a search warrant, Root’s urine was found to contain methamphetamine.

Root did not ask once about her son, the affidavit said. She told investigators she assumed he was safe.

Ravalli County Justice Jennifer Ray set bond at $10,000.
