Fifth-grade students started their first day of school as newcomers to the Hamilton Middle School campus on Monday.

Moms were seen leaving in tears after the first day of dropping off their children.

Principal Marlin Lewis said HMS had a fifth-grade open house on the previous Thursday so the new students knew where to report.

“The parents got to come in and meet the teachers,” Lewis said. “The fifth-grade students knew where they were going and weren’t completely overwhelmed.”

As with any first day there were lots of questions, plenty of hellos and an overall feeling of excitement for a new school year, in person, with masks optional.

“It’s very crazy, but it is good,” Lewis said. “It is good the bells work.”

Lewis explained that schools in the Hamilton School District have staggered start times.

“Daly Elementary School starts at 8:10 a.m., HMS starts at 8:15 and the high school starts at 8:30 a.m.,” he said. “Our doors are open at 7:45 a.m., the first bell is 8:10 to get them to their classroom and the starting bell is at 8:15. Students who come early can go on the playground, have breakfast or hang out with their friends in the hallway by their classrooms.”

He said that although several moms were in tears saying goodbye to their children, but the students were excited to be in school.

“We have a lot of new students, well over 50 new students, so we’re trying to get them to their classes and make them feel comfortable and welcomed,” Lewis said. “Everyone pitched in to help do it and that was wonderful.”

Mrs. (Melissa) Adkins served as crossing guard and is also the school’s social, emotional and behavioral specialist.

She said the first day of school was very busy with parents bringing their kids but all the chaos will soon calm into routines.

“This is the best school and I don’t just say so because I work here,” she said.

At HMS, the school day ends at 3:20 p.m. on regular days and at 12:20 p.m. on early-out days.

Hamilton High School started classes on Monday.

Principal Ryan Wells said all went well.

“We are thrilled to get back to work for another wonderful year at HHS,” he said. “It is always exciting to see students again after a long break, and we are happy to get back into our routine.”

HHS ends each regular and delay start day at 3:30 p.m. and ends at 12:30 p.m. on early-out days.

Darby school started for all grades on Monday.

Superintendent Chris Toynbee said it was a great start.

“[We had an] outstanding start to school with lots of new faces and smiles,” he said.

School hours in Darby are 8:20 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. for grades K-7 and from 8:20 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. for grades 8-12.
