A Darby man who went missing Feb. 14 was found dead Friday by wolverine researchers checking trail cameras near the Tin Cup trailhead just west of Darby.
Dave Norton, 46, was last seen by 11 people riding his bicycle on Highway 93 south of Darby on Valentine’s Day.
Darby Town Marshall Larry Rose said Norton was found right off the trail not far from the trailhead.
Rose said Norton’s death appeared to be a suicide.
“It just doesn’t make any sense to me,” Rose said. “There were 11 people who reported seeing him riding south and no one saw him coming back. It was certainly a strange deal. I didn’t expect it to end like this.”
The Ravalli County sheriff’s office and Ravalli County Search and Rescue volunteers worked together with Rose to investigate the scene and recover Norton’s body.
Norton's disappearance resulted in a large-scale search that included a private party paying for a helicopter to search the area from the air.
Norton was a longtime Darby resident who worked at Neff’s Whitewater Customs in Darby and lived in an apartment over the shop.
