During the night hours of Jan. 31 and early morning Feb. 1, several vehicles were broken into and items were stolen in the Illinois Bench area east of Stevensville.

Ravalli County Sheriff Steve Holton stated that all of the vehicles were left parked and unlocked at or near homes, and it appears the suspects targeted only unlocked cars. A handgun and cash is known to have been stolen from the vehicles.

The thefts occurred in neighborhoods in the Illinois Bench and Stevensville Airport Road areas. He reminded everyone to secure their vehicles and remove items of value from their vehicles when they are left unattended.

Holton said the incidents are under investigation and asked that anyone with information contact his office at 363-3033 or by using the contact buttons on the sheriff's app for mobile devices. People can also contact Crimestoppers to leave anonymous tips at 721-4444.

Anyone who notices suspicious activity or persons in their neighborhood also should contact the sheriff's office.
