A 54-year-old woman died after being struck by van while walking in a traffic lane Thursday night north of Hamilton.

The accident occurred after 10 p.m., said Montana Highway Patrol Sgt. Scott Bennett.

Bennett said he wasn’t certain which direction the woman was walking when she was struck on U.S. Highway 93 between Hamilton and Woodside Cutoff.

“It was cloudy and raining and obviously very dark,” Bennett said. “The visibility was very poor.”

Bennett said there is no indication the van's driver was impaired or that speed was a factor. It has not been determined whether the pedestrian was impaired at the time of the accident.

Bennett said she died at the scene.

The woman’s name is being withheld pending notification of her relatives.
