Poets and aspiring poets are invited to submit original poems on any topic and in any form, including haiku, to the Ravalli County Fair Poetry Contest by Friday.
Entries will be judged in the following categories: K-6 grade, 7-12 grade and 18 years old and older.
Prizes will be awarded in all age groups. Elementary and high school poetry winners will receive an all-day carnival ride pass. Adult poetry winners will receive Chapter One Book Store gift certificates.
Please submit a cover sheet with your name, phone number email address, mailing address and age category on the poem along with the poem title. Name and dedication should not appear on the poem. Please submit no more than two poems. Eight finalists in each age group will be invited to read their poem on the free stage at the fair at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28. An award ceremony will immediately follow. The contest emcee will be Hamilton Mayor Dominic Farrenkopf and five anonymous community judges will read the poems.
This is the ninth year of the poetry contest at the Ravalli County Fair.
Farrenkopf, contest organizer, said every years has “very good poetry entries.”
“I enjoy reading all of them and take comfort in knowing I do not have to judge them,” he said. “I want to encourage everyone to enter the poetry contest as it is a fun way to share your work with others. I think that this is a great platform to share your writing. Writing poetry is fun for all ages and this is a neat contest to enter.”
Poems can be submitted to email@example.com, mailed to Ravalli County Fairgrounds, 100 Old Corvallis Road, Hamilton, MT 59840 or delivered in person to the fairgrounds. Deadline for entry is 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9. Poetry entry does not include free gate admission to the county fair.
