Seven Bitterroot Valley choir and band students have been selected to participate in a 2019 National Association for Music Education (NAfME) All-Northwest performing group and conference, in Portland, Oregon, Feb. 14-17.

Hamilton High School choir students Haylee Bender, second alto, and Cady Rollins, first soprano, have been selected along with over 1,000 other outstanding musicians from over 4,370 students from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming who auditioned to participate in the event.

Peggy Bucheit, director of choirs for Hamilton Schools, said she is proud of her students.

“Through this incredible learning experience, they not only develop their own musical skills, but begin to appreciate the high caliber of students they will be competing against for music scholarships,” Bucheit said. “They begin to realize they must continue to practice and improve to compete at this level. It is an honor to be selected from the best singers in the northwest. I am very proud of these two hardworking young ladies.”

Bucheit said the Hamilton students are leaving Thursday to rehears with the best singers in the six-state region under the direction of a world renowned conductor.

Corvallis High School choir students Gabrielle Kay, Annabelle Kay and Arthur Ryan have been selected to participate in a 2019 National Association for Music Education (NAfME) All-Northwest performing group and conference, in Portland, Oregon, Feb. 14-17.

CHS Choir Director Ruth Reneau said she is proud of her students.

“They put in the hard work and they each truly deserve the honor of attending the All Northwest choirs,” she said.

Florence-Carlton High School junior Nick Sanchez has been selected to participate as a tenor in the 2019 All Northwest Honor Choir.

Stevensville High School Band member John Rodriguez for his selection into the 2019 National Association for Music Education (NAfME) All-Northwest performing group and conference. Rodriguez was taught by band teacher Jeremy Ruff.

A NAfME press release listed well-known alumni of the All-Northwest group include trumpeters Doc Severinson and Allen Vizzutti, Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist and columnist David Horsey, 2008 teacher of the Year Andrea Peterson and jazz saxophonist Kenny G.

The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) is an organization of American music educators dedicated to advancing and preserving music education as part of the core curriculum of schools in the United States.
