It was a short week for competition with area high schools still on holiday break, but the cold weather didn't keep a select few from playing like they were on fire.

Each week, we nominate an equal number of boys and girls for our “Prep Athletes of the Week.” Readers will be able to vote for one boy and one girl in polls that appear by noon Monday at Missoulian.com. Voting will be open through 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

The winners will be published in the Missoulian’s Prep Extra section each Thursday.

Here are this week’s nominees:

Boys

Victor's Kolton Benish scored 26 points Friday to help the Pirates beat Lincoln in basketball and then 24 Saturday in a win over Two Eagle River.

The Missoula Bruins' Danny Lochridge tallied five goals in three games Friday and Saturday, all three Missoula club hockey victories. He had a hat trick Friday and added two assists as well.

Columbia Falls' Ike Schwiekert went 3-0 on Saturday in the final day of the Western Montana Duals wrestling meet -- including two pins in under 1:30 -- to help the MatCats to a team title.

Loyola Sacred Heart's Kevin Swanson hit eight 3-pointers on the way to 32 points in a basketball victory over Plains on Friday.

Frenchtown's Bridger Truett scored 36 points against Whitefish on Saturday, including a half-court 3-pointer with 1 second remaining to win the basketball game.

Girls

Darby's Keely Ehmann scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a basketball win over Valley Christian on Saturday.

Hamilton's Taylor Goligoski scored 24 points Friday and 20 points Saturday, both wins. She has at least 20 points in all five games this season.

Charlo's Shayna Nagy scored 21 points in a big basketball win over Noxon on Saturday.

Arlee's Violet Pablo notched a hoops double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds Friday to help the Scarlets beat Deer Lodge.

Plains's Hailey Phillips scored 17 points in a league basketball victory over Eureka on Saturday.
