Alpine Granite Accents Inc. supplies custom stone work for Montana dream homes

Alpine Granite Accents Inc. is a Bitterroot Valley granite supplier providing high quality custom stone creations for installation in homes throughout Montana.

Kasey and Flora Buoy started their stone business in their garage 17 years ago. They moved their business to U.S. Hwy 93 south of Victor in 2006 and added 4,000 square feet including a show room and state of the art equipment in 2016.

Flora Buoy explained the business.

“All of our work is custom,” she said. “We come out and do laser templates of everything to ensure a good fit. I often go to people’s homes and do measurements and share ideas like a consultation, even if they are just thinking about it. I help people with colors and slab choice.”

Kasey Buoy does the intensive artistic and creative design, coding and computer numerical control work. Trained craftsmen do the cutting, shaping, finishing and installation.

Natural stone is versatile, durable and comes in a rainbow of colors and types including granite, marble, onyx, limestone, travertine and slate. Alpine Granite Accents also installs manufactured quartz surfaces and tile.

“The thing with the natural stone is each piece is its own work of art,” Buoy said. “Every slab will have some characteristic that makes it unique and beautiful.”

Alpine Granite Accents Inc. refines and installs counter tops, bathrooms, bar tops, fireplaces and fire pits. They have also made monuments, urns, fish tanks, benches and columns.

Edge choices and hand finishing are also available.

“Our three largest pieces of equipment are two saws and a CNC machine allowing us to cut any shape,” Buoy said.

The shop also has a large overhead crane to lift the 1,000-pound slabs into place.

Raw materials come from all over the world including Brazil, Peru, South America, India and South Africa.

“It is super fun to go to a quarry,” Buoy said. “It’s quite fascinating. A rock is not just a rock, each piece is unique.”

Once the slabs are extracted, they are shipped to distributers in the United States.

“Our main suppliers are in Denver and Seattle,” Buoy said. “We have a couple hundred slabs and its fun to see them all but when you go to the suppliers they have thousands.”

Buoy said Alpine Granite Accents Inc. is very busy.

“2016 was our very busiest year yet,” she said. “Kasey and I were very fortunate that even when the economy tanked, people were still doing remodels and staying in their homes. We didn’t lay anyone off. We’ve been super thankful to be able to sustain like we have.”

Buoy said the building industry is on the upswing.

“We have big, big projects and not just here in the valley,” she said. “We travel and we have big things going in eastern Montana and Idaho. We have huge condominiums going up in Missoula and quite a bit of commercial work as well.”

Alpine Granite Accents has installed projects in Kalispell, Whitefish and Salmon.

“Because the Bitterroot is a melting pot of people from all over we have a lot of customers with second homes,” Buoy said. “If they live in Seattle they will go and hand-pick their slabs and have them shipped. Slabs come from many different places. We just got some from Nashville. It is fun to see slabs from all over.”

Everyone is welcome to visit Alpine Granite Accents Inc. to see over 100 samples, enjoy the show room and receive guidance on every project.

“There are slabs out front for advertising purposes but we have more out back,” Buoy said.

“The show room has new cabinet displays. This business is always changing. There are always new things that they are finding in the quarries, new colors that are coming out and new finishes. It is a fun business.”

Alpine Granite Accents Inc. is a member of the Bitterroot Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Missoula Building Association, the Bitterroot Building Industry Association, the National Association of Homebuilders, the Marble Institute of America and the National Federation of Independent Businesses.

In 2006, Alpine Granite Accents Inc. was named Montana Small Business Administration Young Entrepreneur of the Year.
