The Montana Masters state swim meet which was held in Kalispell on April 6 and 7 and attracted over 80 swimmers from 20 to 90 years of age. The teams participating were from Missoula, Bozeman, Helena, Whitefish, Kalispell, Great Falls, Dillon, Troy and Hamilton. The Hamilton team took fourth place at the meet.
The Hamilton team was represented by 10 swimmers who are members of the Canyons Athletic Club Masters team. Swimmers include Pat Hastings, Gayle Phillips, Scott Southwick, Colleen Murphy-Southwick, John Croft, Anne Weber, Richard Weber, Mike Montgomery, Kristen Weese, and Susie Thomas, and range in age from 43- 77. Everyone who participated had at least one personal best record in an event they swam.
The Hamilton Masters group is coached by Kristen Weese, (age 45-49) who placed second in one race, and first in her four remaining races. In addition, she swam the fastest time of all women of any age in the 50 fly, completing the race in just over 33 seconds. She inspired everyone, not only with her swimming, but her encouragement and enthusiasm throughout the meet.
Pat Hastings (age 75-79) placed first in all five of her races, with one state record in 1,000 freestyle. She also swam the 100 IM for the first time.
Gayle Phillips (age 65 – 69) finished in first place in seven events, with four personal best times.
Scott Southwick (age 65 – 69) had a personal best in the 100 IM and placed second in two other events, swimming the 1,000 free for the first time.
John Croft (age 60- 64) placed first in the 1,650 and second in the 1,000 freestyle.
Anne Weber (age 60-64) placed first in four races and second in three races. She swam a personal best time in the 100 IM.
Richard Weber (age 60-64) swam a personal best time in all but one of his races. He swam the 100 fly for the first time. He placed second in one event and third in four events. This age group is one of the most competitive in Montana Masters, including a swimmer who is in the top 10 at the national level.
Mike Montgomery (age 45-49) placed first on all his events.
Colleen Southwick (age 55-59) swimming in her second Masters meet, placed first in two events, and second in two events. She swam a personal best in three of her races.
Susie Thomas (age 40- 44) swam personal best times in two of her races, and competed in two new events this year, including the 50 fly and 100 IM. This is another extremely competitive age group.
