KALISPELL -- No team scores were kept, but its easy to tell which schools had the best showings at the Western AA wrestling seeding tournament on Saturday.
Kalispell Flathead beat out Class AA's No. 2 ranked team Missoula Sentinel for the most state qualifiers at Glacier's gym, placing 21 in the top eight over the 13 weight classes. Sentinel was close behind with 19.
Sentinel did it with four champions, though, most among any team at the meet. Flathead only won one weight class.
The Spartans put seven boys in the finals overall, with Jace Kovalicky (132 pounds), Dylan Duffalo (138), Chandler Paulson (145) and Colin Hammock (205) earning firsts. Cameron Hegal (103), Jake Hegel (120) and Bryar Newary (160) all went runner-up.
Schools could enter two wrestlers per class and the top eight got automatic spots in the 16-team State AA bracket next week at Billings' Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark. Billings will host all classifications beginning Friday.
Helena High won three weight classes and Kalispell Glacier and Helena Capital each won two. The Bruins qualified 16 wrestlers, the same number as Missoula Big Sky, while Helena sends 14 to state and Glacier earned 11 spots.
Luke Entzel won Big Sky Sky's only weight class at 170 pounds, but Demo Koures (113), Logan McGreevey (145) and Conner Gordon (205) all finished second.
Glacier's winners were Justin Gibson (103) and Quinn Barber (152) while Trae Vasquez took the 113-pound bracket as Flathead's only champ.
Missoula Hellgate qualified seven wrestlers to state and had one Western AA finalist. Asa Hoerner finished second at 126.
