BUTTE -- Five Corvallis boys and one set of Blue Devils girls advanced to the semifinals of the Southwestern A tennis tournament Thursday, though more could follow.

Stormy weather slowed the first day of the tournament with only a portion of the championship quarterfinals being played Thursday. Seven semifinal spots across the boys' and girls' singles and doubles brackets are still up for grabs.

Leading the Corvallis charge was singles standout DJ Pekoc, last year's State A runner-up. Pekoc won twice Thursday, including a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Butte Central's Sam Sterns in the quarterfinals.

In the boys' doubles bracket, the Blue Devils are guaranteed a finalist as the Corvallis teams of Brock Fehr/Josh Smith and Riley Jessop/Caleb Powell go head to head in the semis.

Hamilton's Josh Heath/Bridger Palin and Stevensville's Colton Belcourt/Curtis Liston will play in the other semifinal.

Hamilton also has a singles semifinals with Alex Raymond one win from the championship bout.

In girls' doubles play, Corvallis's Dakota Vaccarro/Miriam Montgomery made their way into the semis, but will wait to see who their Friday opponent will be.

The singles bracket there is still in the second round with a handful of quarterfinal matchups set. Among the area girls to advance are Corvallis' Laramie McHugh, Shelby Jessop and Amber Wissenbach; and Hamilton's Sarah Trihn.

Neither Wissenbach nor McHugh dropped a point during Thursday's action.
