SUPERIOR – In a fierce battle of state-ranked teams, No. 9 Superior held off No. 4 Charlo, 32-24, for a Western C eight-man football victory on Friday night.

Both teams scored four touchdowns. The difference was that the Bobcats (6-1 conference and overall) were successful on all four of their conversion attempts and the Vikings (6-1, 6-1) failed to convert on all four.

“In the last few years we’ve always had a really good kicker, but this year we didn’t have one that surfaced,” Superior coach Allan Labbe noted. “So we try to do a quick snap on all of our conversions, snap it as soon as the ref places it so they don’t have time to set up on defense.

“We have a series of short-yardage plays we run there, a pretty wide variety, and tonight they were hitting on all cylinders.”

Key to Superior’s success was its passing game. Billy Smith threw for 303 yards on 45 attempts and his favorite receiver was Adam Kay, who piled up 190 yards in receptions with two touchdowns.

Charlo, which did most of its damage on the ground, drew first blood on a Tra Ludeman TD pass. Superior answered with three straight touchdowns, two coming on Smith passes.

Superior led 32-12 in the final frame and then held off a frantic Vikings comeback that netted two touchdowns.
