It was a tough day for Bitterroot Valley teams Wednesday at the dawn of the Western A Divisional basketball tournament.

Of the four area teams playing on the tournament’s first day, only the Stevensville girls came out with a victory. The Yellowjackets topped Whitefish, 65-44, at Hamilton High School’s Dale Berry Court.

The Stevi and Corvallis boys both fell, as did the Hamilton girls, in other tournament action.

Against Whitefish, Stevensville used a 25-point second quarter to take 34-19 lead at halftime. Haley Kampka scored a game-high 15 points and Evynne Alexander and Angel Richards also netted 13.

The Jackets play Southwest A No. 1 seed Dillon on Thursday at 12:45 p.m.

The Hamilton girls lost to Columbia Falls, Northwest A’s top team, by a 55-28 score. Kara Nye’s eight points were a team high. The Broncs next play Friday against an opponent to be determined.

The Columbia Falls boys pulled ahead after trailing Stevi 38-37 after three quarters. The 13 points from James Fry and 11 from Luis Estrada-Ortiz weren’t enough for the Jackets to stay in front. They next play Thursday night at 7:45 p.m. against the loser of Butte Central and Whitefish, a game that finished past print deadline Wednesday.

The Corvallis boys, who lost to Polson 65-47, next play Friday. Full statistics from the Blue Devils’ outing were not available at press time.
