Shame on the Ravalli County Commissioners for defying public opinion and refusing to rescind their letter supporting Daines’ bill to eliminate Montana Wilderness Study Areas.
The commissioners came into power through the democratic process, and yet then they completely subverted our democracy by ignoring the majority. I’m not sure which special interests they represent, but I am certain that they do not represent the citizens of Ravalli County.
In the past, the commissioners have consistently demanded that locals have more control over federal lands, but maybe that is only when the locals agree with their special interest sponsors. Instead, with this decision, they have made it clear that they want Washington D.C. politicians to be in charge of these lands. That view is unfair to their constituents, and this bill will hurt all Americans who hunt, fish, hike, and recreate in these WSAs.
Ravalli County is a special, spectacular place, but the commissioners and Daines seem intent on making it like the rest of America—overpopulated, overdeveloped, without access to clean water, clean air, or unspoiled land.
If democracy survives, let’s vote these unscrupulous politicians out of office in upcoming elections. And that includes Daines, too.
