Counterfeit bills are circulating in the Stevensville area, according to Ravalli County Sheriff Steve Holton.
A fake $100 bill was recently used at a business in the Stevensville area. That follows a fake $20 bill that was passed in Stevensville in July. Holton said the cases and bills are substantially different, but his office is investigating the possibility the cases are connected
Holton wants all citizens, and particularly businesses, to be aware and to closely inspect currency before accepting payment.
The $100 bill had foreign markings on it and was recognizable as fraudulent. The $20 bill was of better quality, but a close inspection would reveal that it too was fake.
The Ravalli County Sheriff's Office is following up with a suspect described in the most recent case as an adult white male with brown facial hair. The suspect was driving a blue mid 90's Ford F-150 truck with a tool box in the bed.
Holton asks that anyone with information or who recognizes the individual or vehicle to contact his office at 363-3033 or by using the Crime Tip or contact buttons on the Ravalli County Sheriff's app for mobile devices.
