People who have had too much to drink can get a free tow within 10 miles of their location through Operation “Tipsy Tow,” a service through AAA and Wimp’s Body Works Inc. in Hamilton.
The Wimp’s offer began Christmas Eve and will continue through 6 a.m. Monday, Jan. 1.
The program is for motorists who feel they have had too much to drink. Any motorist, not just AAA members, can call 1-800-222-4357 for a free tow and a ride home. Ask for a “Tipsy Tow,” and provide the driver’s name, home address, phone number, and current vehicle and driver location.
Amber Walker, a bookkeeper at Wimp's, said this is their fourth year of offering this service.
“We haven’t had a lot of people call in,” she said. “I don’t know if people don’t know about it or if they are making other arrangements.”
Wimp’s can only tow a vehicle 10 miles for free from the vehicle's current location; for longer trips, they charge the company’s standard rate.
Anyone can call for a “Tipsy Tow” – drivers, passengers, bartenders, party-hosts, or even restaurant managers. However, “Tipsy Tow” will not provide tows another drinking establishment or to a destination other than a person's home or to a hotel if the motorist is a guest. The service does not offer light service duties, such as vehicle starts, flat tire change, battery replacement, gas delivery, or taxi service.
Walker said “Tipsy Tow” is a good program for Wimp’s.
“It is keeping drunk drivers off the street,” she said. “We do it to keep everyone safe out there.”
